NEWPORT YOUTH LIBRARY & SENIORS CENTRE
The project comprises the restoration of the historic Newport Mechanics Institute Hall and construction of a new two-storey multi-use community facility. The development includes a youth services centre, library, music studio, maternal and child health centre, and various shared community spaces. Gross floor area 3,735 m2.
The development is located within the historic Newport Civic and Commercial Precinct and includes refurbishment of the historic Newport Mechanics Institute Hall which was constructed in 1933-1935. The single storey heritage building will undergo major restoration works comprising:
- Repairs to the rendered masonry facade including brick stitching, render replacement and water proofing.
- New sub-floor, re-use of salvaged timber floor boards and remediation of lead paint throughout the building.
- Structural roof repairs and installation of steel windows.
- Upgrade to electrical and hydraulic services throughout.
