The new library consisting of bluestone facades, curved glazed walls timber decking, flexible exhibition/performance spaces, community meeting areas; study room, children’s area; dedicated Heritage Room for family and local history researchers; library lounge, cafe; book sale room and self serve check out.
The state-of-the-art library with 1400m2 floor area has 22 computers with internet access, iPads, gaming consoles, self-serve technology, print, scan and copying facilities with Wi-Fi throughout. Also, there is a large collection of books, magazines, DVDs/CDs including specialist collections of local maritime and indigenous history.
Sustainability initiatives include a 45,000 litre water tank harvesting library roof water to supply toilets and garden irrigation, underfloor plenum for air distribution, hydronic slab heating, night purging of warm air, solar hot water, and sensors that control lighting levels and activate blinds to maintain comfort levels for occupants. The Building Automation System monitors the consumption of water, electricity, and gas. The lift services both the library and Town Hall, and there is an accessible bathroom with shower and hydraulic lift /hoist, integrated ramps and accessible shelving for people with mobility difficulties.
